The Lions Club of Sydney Chinese Inc is a member of Lions Clubs International, an international non profit community service organization, upholding a common motto “WE SERVE”. It has now been 95 years since Melvin Jones established the first Lions club in USA in 1917. A typical Lions year begins on 1 July and ends on 30 June in the ensuing year.
Today, there are Lions clubs in 206 countries and geographical areas all over the world. In District 201N5, which covers the Sydney area and Norfolk Island, there are some 75 clubs with around 1,750 members. Amongst these, there are 8 Chinese-based clubs. Sydney Chinese Lions is the first of these Chinese-based clubs chartered in April 1995.
Currently, Sydney Chinese Lions comprises 132 Active Members and 5 Associate Members. The 5 Associate Members that the club is privileged to have inducted are International President Wing-Kun Tam, Immediate Past International President Sid Scruggs III, International First Vice President Wayne Madden, International Second Vice President Barry Palmer and Past International Director Tapani Rahko. In membership terms, the club enjoys top ranking in District N5.

On 8 February International President Lion Dr Wing-Kun Tam visited Sydney. Sydney Chinese Lions held a Chinese New Year lunch party in his honour. International 2nd VP Lion Barry Palmer AM and Lion Anne Palmer were Guests of Honour. Both Lion Tam and Lion Palmer are Associate Members of the Club. For those Club members who do not have the opportunity to meet their Associate Members that often, it was an auspicious start to the Year of the Dragon.
Earlier, on the first day of the month, at the beginning of the February Meeting, nominations for the 2012-13 Board of Directors were held. With the attendance of DG Lion Steve Coleman, Cabinet Secretary Lion John Daley and PDG Lion Peter Mendl, the nomination process was smoothly conducted. Elections of Club officers will be held at the Members Meeting on 7 March 2012. At the Elections meeting, only those who have been nominated can be elected. Members who miss out on this occasion but wish to serve the Club as Board members are encouraged to put their names forward in the 2013-14 Nominations which will occur on 6 February 2013.
On 17 February 2012, the March quarter Zone 4 Meeting will be hosted by Sydney Pacific Lions at Fook Yuen Seafood Restaurant, corner of Help and Railway Streets, Chatswood. All are encouraged to attend and meet other Lions in the Zone. For bookings please contact President Lion Mei Cheng or Secretary Lion Janice Cheung.
The inaugural Wealth Management and Investment Seminar organized by Sydney Chinese Lions for the Chinese speaking public is to be held on Sunday, 26 February 2012 from noon to 4:45 pm at the Burwood RSL Club. Admission is free.
Our Charity Ball 2012 is just around the corner. We are anticipating a full night of entertainment and enjoyment. Members who still have not booked their tickets and those who are thinking of inviting friends to the function should reserve their tickets with President Mei or Secretary Janice. Club Members are also encouraged to assist in selling Charity Ball tickets in support of the Club’s sole fundraising initiative in 2011-12.
In conjunction with DG Steve Coleman, Sydney Chinese Lions have organized a Tree Planting Project in response to International President Tam’s call for global planting of trees. 500 trees will be planted on Crown land to be managed by the Dundundra Falls Reserve Trust at Terrey Hills. Subscription for the planting of a tree is $20. The support of N5 Lions for this project is highly appreciated.
